  • Left to right: Debbie Nance, blogger at Readerbuzz; Rae, wearing Debbie’s hat; Ronald McLaughlin IV, my Birthday Twin; and Becky, Ronnie’s Grandmother, driver, and girlfriend, extraordinaire.

We left Alvin at 6 am and returned at 6 pm…a long and joy-filled day!

Deb and I heard SANDRA CISNEROS! What an experience that was; she lit up the room with her wit and words. Ronnie found old books (his passion) in the SA Central Library Basement ON SALE! (More on my purchases later.)

It has taken this eighty-year-old two days to recoup, but IT WAS WORTH IT!

  • I have found a wonderful new blogger!!! Her latest poem made my day as I celebrate National Poetry Month.

I hope to blog a Sunday Update tomorrow.

    Rae 4/5/25

  • How does the year fly by so fast? How does the week do the same; here it is Sunday again! Each year (I tend to think in semesters and the year starting in August or September, a result of over fifty years in the classroom in some teaching position) brings changes, and hopefully, each year brings growth.

It was just in August of 2024 that I accepted a part-time position teaching for Apogee Gulf Coast, Alvin campus, a private school beginning its first year of residency in my home town. This school year has been one of the best, including my 34 years at the university level. Teaching English Language skills to ages 10-15, brought me back to my first love–junior high. Currently, I have seven students, who are all really good kids, polite and respectful (the majority of the time…LOL) Seriously, these kids are at school to learn. They find their own joy in the act of learning, are cooperative, and rarely goof off . Yes, you know what is coming next, for this sounds like a farewell. It is.

Because of physical issues (after all, I am eighty; I’m allowed to have them.) I had to choose between holding a regular teaching job and running Rae’s Reads, my bookstore. As part of the Apogee family, I intend to substitute and volunteer as needed, just not be a part of the staff. And, none of this means I will stop teaching. The difference is that it will be short workshops of several hours and on specific topics. Recently I held a Sunday afternoon Poetry Workshop (the third we’ve had) which resulted in a poetry group which will continue to meet at the bookstore “irregularly and spasmodically” throughout the year. Oh, and did I mention there is always food involved?

As I transition into this new chapter of my life (again!), I covet your prayers that through me, God will work his will and prosper my bookstore/bookhub in ways that always glorify Him.

p.s. Maybe now I will have time to blog more often!

  • I have so many great cover images to choose from, but this one says it all.

When our Tuesday Readers. Book Club chose this book for our March selection, my first. reaction was, “Oh, good, I don’t have to read the book.” I had read the “trilogy” when it was first published in the 70s. Searching my memory-bank, I couldn’t remember anything about Adams’ book except that it was about a book and that the. whole novel was bizarro.

In my search for an audiobook on Spotify, I came across a twenty-something part, read-aloud podcast dating from the pandemic by the Bearded Wit, which was filled with pauses for “slurps of tea,” cracking-up fits of laughter at the humor of the book, and passing sirens in the background. What a delight! (The reader mentioned he was working on an edited, cleaned-up version of the podcast on his YouTube. channel–but where’s the fun n that?)

I am currently on part twenty-seven and listening to the fifth book, reminiscing about the first three, which I read before. Books four and five are new to me, and only the first book was required by our book club. I expect to finish my “ride” today, then look into renting the movie later tonight.

Consider this post my “Sunday Update” on what I’m currently reading, dear friends.
