  • SATURDAY MORNINGS FOR KIDS

THIS SATURDAY MORNINGS FOR KIDS will appear on Sunday morning. At PWR (powerfulwomenreaders), Saturday mornings are reserved for recommendations for kids’ books, just as Saturday mornings of TV programming were focused around cartoons for kids in the 50s and 60s.

This recommendation is for younger read-to-me kids who might have ,or just be growing out of imaginary friends.
Rovetch’s approach to “getting rid of” imaginary friends is unique. When a child begins to have real-world friends, imaginary friends are no longer necessary.

Trigwater is always getting Arnie in trouble. He does things like writing on walls, pulling little girls’ pigtails, and sailing a paper airplane across Arnie’s teacher’s nose. Arnie’s principal tells Arnie Trigwater must behave, or they will both be sent home. Arnie thinks about this a long time and has a long, serious talk with Trigwater.

Will Trigwater reform? And, something interesting happens when another student sees Trigwater. Another question answered by the wonderful illustration on the last page is, What happens to imaginary friends when children “outgrow” them?

This is a darned good read for you and your child or grandchild.

Families that read together, stay together!

  • “It is more blessed to give than receive,” and the spirit of Christmas involves giving.

We ended up being blessed today as we invited an Afghan refugee family and their friends/helpers into our home for lunch today. The man, an interpreter for the US Marines in Afghanistan, his young pregnant wife and their son left Afghanistan with only the clothes on their backs. We went through our house, giving them furniture that was extra, household goods (We had many duplicates), and clothes we didn’t need (Who needs five pairs of shoes?). And My Better Half said he didn’t need 12 short sleeve shirts or five long-sleeved ones (Ali is the same size as he is). I had fixed lentils with no meat for the Muslims, and the other two men helping them had sausage rounds added to their bowls. We had an SUV and truck filled with furniture, and bags and boxes of things we were willing to share leave our house around three that afternoon.

I was interested that these Muslims celebrated Christmas–the secular parts of it: trees, Santa Claus, candy canes, etc. We shared our decorations and Christmas wrapping paper, etc. as well.

Their friend, a retired Marine, who has helped many refugee families told us almost the entire apartment building this couple lives in houses refugees from all over the world. He helps many families regardless of their home country, religion, etc. What a blessing he is, and what an honor it was for us to meet him.

THIS IS WHAT CHRISTMAS IS ALL ABOUT!

    MERRY CHRISTMAS

  • First Line Friday encourages bloggers to copy the first line of their current read in hopes of adding to their blogging friends’ TBRs.

Today’s Friday First Liner comes from Pony by R. J. Palicio.

Those who liked Wonder by the same author will love this book.

“It was my bout with lightning that inspired Pa to become immersed in the photographic sciences, which is how this all began.”

I have just begun the book, but it is already marvelous.

KEEP ON READING; IT”S FOR GROWNUPS TOO.

  • CHRISTMAS BLOGMAS RUNS FROM DECEMBER FIRST THROUGH Christmas Day.

BLOGMAS is a celebration of Christmas in the blogging world. I saw the lead up posts to this blog-holiday on my younger blogging friends’ posts as early as seven days before December 1st, describing preparations, goals and hopes for Blogmas this year. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and I am now fully invested in the idea. The earliest Blogmas celebrations required posting every day, all 25 days. This year the blogging young ladies qualified their efforts by posting two times a week or every other day. I am going to post something Christmassy every single day, even if it is short or just a meme or photograph. I’ve had no time to “prepare” as my young friends have been doing, for I have gathered all their Blogmas posts in a folder and just started looking at it this evening. But it sounds like so much fun!

Let’s not forget what our hearts are meant to be focused on this season. I hope to share this focus on some of my Blogmas posts as well.

Mostly, my posts will be sharing Christmas photos and memes. Others may be reviews of Christmas-themed books or wishlists or guest posts from surprise visitors. Stay tuned. I KNOW I am going to have fun; I hope you will too.

I’ll write; you read, and we’ll celebrate BLOGMAS together.
