RAE’S READS

51BOIIIsmIL

The Humiliations of Pippi McGeeΒ by Beth Vrabel deals with every humiliation eighth grade has to offer. Several common themes appear in humorous ways: bullying, revenge, forgiveness, taking the “high road,” approaching high school, and finding one’s niche. Pippi is an unforgettable character who makes us cringe, makes us laugh, and makes us sigh, sometimes all in the same chapter.

On a more serious note,41473877Β  Gail Villanueva’sΒ My Fate According to theΒ ButterflyΒ introduces the reader to Sab who sees a black butterfly and is convinced it is the harbinger of her imminent death. She awaits only her birthday to meet her fate. Set in the Philippines, this story is beautifully, hauntingly written.

These books were selected by librarians serving grades 5 through 8. I read over two hundred of them and enjoyed them immensely.

So did I, and although by the time I got to these two, I was skimming, I carefully read each of these. “Monster” was particularly good in that it helped students decide when they needed professional help. The girl in the story didn’t want to put another burden on her mom.
