“(Gratitude) turns what we have into enough…” I remember a powerful story about gratitude from the book my older son, Jon, had to read in junior high English, The Hiding Place. Two sisters were in a concentration camp. Betsie urged Corrie to be grateful for everything. For everything? Corrie scoffed. The fleas? The fleas in the camp were horrendous, and Corrie sternly told Betsie she would never be grateful for fleas. But then the sisters were able to start a Bible study in the camp and they were never bothered by the camp guards. It was puzzling until the sisters realized that it was because the guards wouldn’t come near the building because of…the fleas. So, yes, gratitude. For everything. Even the fleas.

Yes, The Hiding Place also reminds me of the power of forgiveness. It has many takeaways.
